The Process
What I loved about her business was the mission behind it. "We strive to change the mindsets of girls, so they believe in themselves and what they can accomplish. Teaching entrepreneurial and economic principles built for prosperity." (About page on thatgirlconnections.org). As a young adult myself, I really appreciated the fact that she was putting her time and energy into helping the new generation. I felt like it was an honor and privilege to work with someone as kind as she was.
What was also very lovely with working on thatgirlconnections.org was finding ways to express the importance of her nonprofit; as someone who made websites for products working on a nonprofit organization website allowed me to use my talents differently. There was more heart needed for her site, and it made me realize how much I enjoyed creating sites, even if they were outside my comfort zone.
We worked together for about a month. I worked on her site like it was my own, of course with check-ins to make sure LaWanda was still satisfied. There were even points where we worked together, selecting photos she wanted and designing her logo together. After every check-up, it felt very satisfying seeing her website come to life. As the days went by it started to feel like I was part of her team!
We had to first break down her vision and what the website needed and did not need. Those needs became the navigation bar. From there, I designed a look for each page that expressed what that page was about. How could I get the attention of her future clients? One page was done, and I got the thumbs up from her. It was time to move on to the next page or task.
